Elias M. Smith died at his home about six miles southwest of Crawfordsville at 12:20 o’clock May 3, 1898. He was born at Mt. Pleasant, Hamilton County, Ohio, July 4, 1811. His age was 86 years, 9 months and 30 days. He was married to Sarah A. Hickman March 13, 1834. The young couple moved to Indiana, arriving at the present homestead Aug. 18, 1836, where they have resided ever since. To them was born seven children, five of whom, three sons and two daughters, are still living.
He was baptized by Elder Reece Davis and united with Freedom Baptist Church in 1840. The funeral services were held at the residence and the remains were laid to rest in the old Presbyterian burial ground on the road between New Market and Brown’s Valley.  Elias Smith was a good man. His best and truest manhood was seen and felt alone in his home and with his family. He was in possession of a humble, honest, consistent, beautiful Christian character. He bore all the trials and afflictions of life with a sweet Christian resignation. His last months were months of great suffering but he bore it without a murmur. He was willing to die, and for weeks before his departure begged to “go home.” He was a good husband and a kind and indulgent father. He loved his home and his family and made every possible sacrifice to make these happy. The old home, where he was the strength and the joy for sixty years, is sad and lonely without him. His chair by the old family hearthstone, where he sat and waited so long for his time to “go home” and his place at the table are vacant. We miss him everywhere about the place. But we sorrow not as those who have no hope for he is with the angels. We only pray that our “last end may be like his.” -s
